An Iowan Intro and a few quesitons

Hey everyone,
I really enjoyed the intros that have already been posted so I thought I would post my own.

My name is Amber and I live in Iowa City while my husband goes to Dental school (we're half way through our 2nd year...which means we're ALMOST half way finished!). We have two kiddos,  3 1/2 years old and 20 months. I love them so much and we have busy lives, so my energy, my attitude, and my ability to foster a spiritual environment in my home are priorities!

Before Christmas I had started to get back into shape, but with the great food of Holidays I'm fighting to get back into a routine. So, just like many of you, when Angela posted her challenge, I was excited! I initially thought the 4 servings of vegetables/fruit would be easy because we try to incorporate them into our meals, but it's actually more difficult than I thought! On that note, how do you count your servings if the package doesn't tell you how much a serving is? For whole fruit, I'm just kind of saying One Whole is one serving. Is that at all accurate?

My personal challenge is going to be difficult for me (yay for a husband who keeps me aware and encourages me!). I love doing craft projects and evening/night time is the time to do them! But, it has taken a toll on my energy, on my happiness, and most importantly on my ability to be a patient and loving Mama. So, this goal is so important to me. I recently read a book that my Mama gave me for Christmas full of anecdotes and vignettes. One such reflection reminded me how much I need to be willing to sacrifice to be the woman I want to be...not just what's comfortable to be. Because I've gotten really comfortable with who I am, but I don't LIKE who I am. So this will help me achieve multiple other goals to aid my realization.

Anyway, I don't have much to offer to everyone except a comrade in ranks, but I'm happy to be a part of the challenge and I'm looking forward to a healthier me!

Just a reminder of the question I need answering: how do you measure your fruit/veggies without a nutrition label? Is one fruit equal to one serving?

  1. I use choosemyplate.gov. Some vegetable are 1 cup or half a cup. And fruits vary by size.

    Good luck!

  2. I love the thought "comfortable to be" versus "want to be"! Thank you for sharing and thanks for asking that question and thanks Kelsey for answering. I needed an answer too.

  3. In reading about your doing crafts at night, it reminds me a lot about me. I tend to have "projects" of various natures that I love to do. I tend to get a great idea in my head and then dive into them without too much thought, so I have many half-finished things floating around, and I feel the stress of 'not finishing' things. I had a thought the other day that I know had to be inspiration, because it had never occurred to me before: "If you can't get everything done and you are trying, then you are doing too much". I am trying to find a way to cut out the excess and focus on what is truly important, but my 'comfortable' self doesn't want to change as much as my 'want to be' self. Hang in there! :)

    1. So...are you saying that trying to reupholster a couch, paint three rooms, and sew a baby quilt all this month might be a lottle too much? No wonder I'm tired! But....I also want them done and out of the way before baby comes. A, the balancing act of life.
